Moving Mountains for His Children: Project Valor Update

10/31/2016

Project Valor is a shining example of God's faithfulness, provision, and love for His children. In September of 2015, God gave me a dream of starting a sponsorship program so the children living around the city dump in the community of Piedra Parada could continue their education to middle and high school.

Journal entry from September of 2015

My team and I, along with the directors of a couple schools we volunteered at, brainstormed how we could make this dream possible. When I left to come home in October, we had a plan, but we needed the funds to make it possible. And this is where God's faithfulness and goodness shines. A Christian man I met on a plane earlier that year sent me a message asking if there was any project his small group could help support. I shared with him our idea, and before I knew it, we had the funding we needed to cover all the expenses for the program for a year! In 2016, 5 students enrolled in our program. Along with the sponsorship, the middle schoolers attended our tutoring program twice a week to receive help on their homework. The tutoring program also gave our missionaries an opportunity to disciple these students and share a devotional with them each day. Two of the girls asked Jesus to be their Lord and Savior earlier this year at the tutoring program. Praise God!

2016 Project Valor Students

Fast forward to this summer. Pastor Roni tells me this year's graduating class is much bigger and 16 new students want to continue onto middle school and are interested in a sponsorship. I was a bit overwhelmed thinking about finding new monthly sponsors for all these kids! But one thing that God declared over me when we started this program last year was that He would move MOUNTAINS for His Children, that I was just His vessel, and that this program and these children were in His hands, not mine. And before I knew it, we had committed sponsors for all of these children. How cool is our God!? He loves His children so much. If we just put our trust in Him, He will not fail us.

He's a good Father, and He loves His children!

From one of our new students in response to what do you want to say to your supporter:

"Hi, thank you for helping me. This is a great opportunity and I am going to work very hard. Thank you, I adore you."

These students are so grateful! Not only do these sponsorships help the students, they also help the parents greatly.

It has been a great joy to see how God has provided for His children and this ministry. To see how He has grown Pure Joy and how He has provided staff who love Him and desire to serve Him is incredible. We’ve faced trials and problems this year, but God has faithfully held us in His hands. One thing God has been declaring to me over this ministry is that with Him, we will not be shaken! We stand on solid ground. We can trust that amidst the struggles and the pain, if we stand firm on God’s promises, we will be unshaken.
Thank YOU for coming alongside us-- supporting us, praying for us, and serving with us. We are SO grateful for you. As we look to 2017, we are in need of more monthly donors to help cover general ministry expenses including supplies, transportation expenses, and support for our missionaries. The Joy in Serving {Gerson}

Ever since I responded to God saying, “Here I am, send me,” He has surprised me in different and unexplainable ways every day.

In the ministries every day, we realize that God is doing wonderful things in our lives and in the lives of the people that we share every day with. This sensation— the feeling of hugging someone in need, of helping someone who in need, of teaching a child the pathway that leads to Jesus— is something God feels and moves in.

I can see Jesus in the places we go. I can see Him in something as small as the smile of an orphan and in the joyful face of an elderly man at the nursing home who was abandoned by his family. Although there are people who are willing to help in these places, we, as a ministry, have the privilege to be part of their joy every day. Despite the situations they face, for me and for our team, it is a joy to be able to help them and to share Jesus with them in every opportunity we have to do so. They have understood that every moment that we live is by the grace of God, and that He has plans for our lives, no matter our age.

I first give thanks to God for the privilege to serve Him together with people who are also ready and willing to sacrifice many things for His sake. I give thanks for them and to God. We know that we are where we are doing what we are doing for Him as it is written in Philippians 2:13, “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

I am thankful too for every person that has helped us move forward in one way or another. We know that everything we do is so that others will know who Jesus is, and to fulfill His command to love our neighbor and to share God’s word. It is a joy, privilege, and blessing to be part of the Pure Joy Missions’ team and to serve God in Puerto Barrios. Thanks be to God.

Serving through Therapy {Heidi}

We had the great privilege of working with Abby and Heidi this past August & September. Recent graduates with the doctorate in Physical Therapy, these two young women have a passion for service and want to use their gifts and talents to help others and glorify God. We are so grateful they partnered with us to provide physical therapy and education at the special needs school and nursing home.

A note from Heidi:

"After Abby and I graduated from physical therapy school this past August, we were interested in spending time serving people in another part of the world.  We knew we wanted to be a part of Pure Joy after hearing their mission to “bring hope and healing to communities by sharing the love and joy found in Jesus Christ.” During our few weeks in Guatemala, we were able to join the team in ministries, provide physical therapy to children at the special needs school, and deliver training sessions for the staff at the elderly home.  Our favorite part was educating the families and getting to know the students at the special needs school. The children we met were so full of life!

During that time, I was reminded of Matthew 25 when Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me …Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” God taught us, through Pure Joy Missions that making a difference does not have to be through extravagant plans or large-scale movements.  Sometimes it is about helping a child walk better, feeding an elderly person, or praying with a family.  Making a difference is ultimately about sharing the love and joy of Jesus Christ."
Thank you Heidi and Abby for the selfless love you shared with our friends.
